大英圖書館發布100萬頁報紙的數字版本 作為免費資源

據外媒報道，大英圖書館將其檔案中的報紙副本數字化的項目將發布一百萬頁報紙作為免費資源。英國報紙檔案館（BNA）擁有超過4400萬頁報紙，主要是英國和愛爾蘭的報紙，時間範圍為1699年到2009年，佔大英圖書館所有報紙的不到10%。目前，每月約有50萬頁被添加到BNA中。

目前，訪問該服務需要訂閱，因為這有助於資助掃描和記錄添加到在線檔案的每份報紙的費用。不過，為了向研究人員開放更多的檔案，大英圖書館已經免費發布了100萬頁報紙的數字版本，並承諾在接下來的四年裡每年再發布100萬頁。因此，大英圖書館總共將發布500萬頁的舊報紙文章的數字版本。

大英圖書館不會增加所有的報紙，因為該機構工作人員表示，雖然他們認為1881年以前的報紙屬於公共領域，但這並不意味着將免費提供所有1881年以前的數字化內容，因為檔案館要靠訂閱來支付其成本。

對於免費服務，有158份報紙提供，時間範圍為1720年到1880年。後者的日期很重要。所有構成”免費觀看”的報紙都是已過版權期的。大英圖書館在確定一份報紙何時可被視為完全失去版權時，會遵守一個 “安全日期”，即出版日期后140年。
